Lamont came out of the shadows in the barn this morning and scared the crap out of me. I was expecting a skunk (yes, she really is that big), but got a panhandling feral rabbit instead.

Speaking of, my hands are apparently very lickable? I don’t know if it’s my lotion or what, but the dogs, the rabbits, and the ponies always lick my hands and try to eat them. Maybe my hands are just sweaty and they all think I’m walking around with salt licks attached to my arms.

I was eating lunch while keeping an eye on everyone when I heard what sounded like a clown car horn convention start up in the barn. Damien was up on the top of The Family’s enclosure in the barn and wasn’t happy about it, and Richmond and Dalton were responding in kind. The funny thing I’ve noticed about these peafowl is that, sometimes, they fly up on top of things and then suddenly forget how to get back down. I wonder if peafowl don’t have great eyesight and they just have a more difficult time gaging how far down they would have to drop? It can’t be that bad because I watched Damien race across the yard to chase down a pigeon that was checking out the chickens. I haven’t figured it out yet why they do that – fly up onto something high, forget they can fly off it. On a side note, Damien has started to make a completely different noise lately. I think he’s trying to figure out his mating call and it sounds like a dude going through puberty and it cracks me up.

More adventures in pullet eggs! So, these are calcium deposits. They happen when the pullet/hen has too much calcium and needs to get rid of it. Whoever laid this one needs to give that calcium to the one laying the thin shelled eggs lately! One of these days, I might figure out a good balance for everyone.

Everyone was in a mood today. I’m sure it has to do with the weather being unseasonably warm lately. They just want to get out of the pen, break off into their social groups & do their own thing. I don’t blame them, I just can’t stay out there & watch them that long/often right now still. That didn’t stop Section 20 from being a bunch of feathered jerks & refusing to be rounded up for the night. I spent about 30 minutes chasing after them, trying to herd them back into the pen for the night. I’ll be glad when the weather is nice throughout the day & night & I have that flight pen set up. Then I won’t have to round them up at night – they can round themselves up.

I did get a second soft shell today. Still not sure who laid it, but I’ve ruled out the Ithakē ladies since the egg wasn’t fertilised. I’ll have to do some refresher research on soft shell eggs to see if I need to be worried & what I can do to help prevent it from becoming something to worry about. I also really need to get my Chick Cams up in the Big House & the pen. That’ll help narrow down who’s laying eggs.

Still sick (turned out to get the Yahtzee of illnesses) & had to go into the Day Job today, so that’s the reason for the lack of pictures. Too exhausted with a head full of heaviness to fanny about taking pictures this evening. Hopefully more tomorrow.
