It pretty much snowed all day today & made being sick even more miserable. I always thought that it was an old wives tale that wounds hurt when the weather changed, but damned if my ankles up to my lower back don’t feel like they did while I was in hospital. Before the birds got put up for the night & before it got dark, I got a new layer of straw hay down in the chicken run. I don’t think it’ll get much warmer tomorrow than it did today, but I figured I’d get the run ready for them to be out in. I’m pretty sure if I made them stay in the barn another day, Odysseus will peck my eye out for real this time.

Here’s 1 of the pair of hawks that have taken up residence in our neighborhood. They have been circling pretty heavy over our property & the neighbor’s. Colloquially, we refer to them as “chicken hawks” because they like to pick off chickens, but I’m not sure exactly what breed they are. East from us is a Bald Eagle nest, but I haven’t seen them around lately. I’ve been thinking of trying to let the flock free range a bit on the weekends when I can watch them, but I’ve been having second thoughts thanks to these guys. I’m surprised that our neighbors haven’t put a cover on their chicken run yet since the hawks hang out in their trees pretty heavy, but they’re city folks who just moved to the country & have gone through about every animal you can have legally so far (they just got a single horse, which I think is a bad idea since they don’t have enough land for a horse to feed on & because 1 horse is a lonely horse; you gotta have at least 2, they’re herd animals, dude!).

2 eggs today. I had been kinda worried that some of the eggs have been coming out messy, like the 1 today. After some research, it seems like it’s just something that happens sometimes & it’s not a big deal as long as the hen’s vent isn’t crusted up with fecal matter. Luckily, none of the hens or Odysseus have had this problem yet. It’s easy to take care of (just give them a bath), but that would suck to have to do in our current weather.
