Early this morning, we got our first significant snow of the season. Of course, it came in sideways with a brutal wind & filled the main pen. So much for the roof keeping the birds dry! Anyhow, no one was leaving the Big House willingly until around noon when the sun had started to melt a majority of the snow.

This is the first snow Memnoch, Mercury, Lila, Nyx, Sparta, Richmond & Dalton have ever encountered. And it was hilarious to watch them interact with it. Mercury, Lila, Nyx & Sparta stayed in the Big House as much as possible & then to the cleared off dirt areas when the snow started melting. Memnoch spent the morning in the barn (because I was still tired at 6:30AM & didn’t feel like taking the snow out of his temporary area. When I let him out of the barn, he ran up to the snow outside the barn, stopped in confusion, then proceeded to act like a kid playing The Floor Is Lava all the way to the area around the Big House that had melted. I wish I could have gotten video of it, but I was laughing so hard at him that I almost fell over. He was easy to catch after that because he refused to walk on the snow. Richmond & Dalton stuck pretty close to Damien the second time out of the main pen. I assume Damien had seen snow before since he’s a year old & it’s kinda hard to avoid snow in CO unless he was kept in a greenhouse of sorts all year. Anyhow, he was the only one that really went out to investigate things. All 3 peas walked in the snow in a very slow, deliberate, hilarious way.

Hopefully, I can get Memnoch’s pen built this weekend & get everything wrapped in plastic sheets to keep them as dry & warm as I possibly can. I’m hoping to be able to put some 2x4s up as roosts since the ones I currently have in the main pen are too thin for Damien to roost on & are getting too thin for Richmond & Dalton as they continue to grow. I’ll try to put a couple in both pens. The long term goal is to have them all be a single flock again instead of 2 flocks with Memnoch trying to kill Odysseus every time I turn my back on them. It just depends on what I can physically do & what I can afford. I wish I could sell more artwork to help supplement my Day Job pay check since that’s been cut because of my FMLA. I just can’t seem to find my market. Or my art just isn’t good enough for people to want to pay for it. Lots of people like it when they try to get it for free. Hopefully, as long as my medical bills don’t increase again, I’ll be able to save money to put towards the flock projects.

Not the best size comparison since my hand isn’t flat on the ground next to the footprint, but Damien’s feet are as long as my entire hand is. Dinosaur feet on that dude. Thankfully, his spurs are still rounded. I don’t want to see the damage those things could do if the grew to points like Odysseus’s have.
