Had to catch Richmond to give her the first dose of meds for the parasites and to hopefully get her feeling better. If this doesn’t work, Dr. Miller said there’s only 2 other options for the cause right now: allergies or she has granulomas in her air sacs. What’s causing the uncertainty in diagnosing her is that, she has no other symptoms other than the coughing and mouth breathing. She eats a ton, drinks a ton, runs around and is active with Dalton and Damien and the chickens. Other than the cough and mouth breathing, she presents as a normal peahen.

I was a little nervous drenching her myself, but I needed to do it and get used to it since she has 4 more drenches after this and 2 will be while Dad is on an elk hunting trip. Dad is the only one who will help me with the birds because Mom is afraid of them (but likes to watch them from afar) and Mikey just doesn’t like birds. So, I need to find someone to hold her while I drench her on Friday and Saturday. Hopefully, I can talk Mikey into it. She’s getting a little better about being handled and didn’t poop all over until after the meds and pictures were taken. That’s an improvement! Before, I wouldn’t have had a hold of her for more than 30 seconds before she ejected her defense mechanism all down my legs.

I decided to catch up Dalton while I was out there since she dinged her beak pretty good on the roof of the Big House while I was catching Richmond. The first time I tried to catch Richmond, she flew into my face and got caught in my hair and that made Dalton hit the roof and land on my back. It was a mess. I’m always worried that I’m going to hurt them if I grab onto them too tightly or I’m going to stress them into a heart attack (which, I know, makes no sense to prolong the activity of trying to catch them). I need to be more decisive about catching them and handling them or they’re never going to get used to it.

Anyhow, Dalton didn’t do as much damage as I thought and she should be fine to let it heal on its own.

I did notice that it looks like someone is pecking out Richmond’s crest feathers. I didn’t realize it until I caught Dalton and noticed how full her crest is. I don’t know who the culprit is yet, but I’m hoping it stops soon. Richmond looks silly with 3 crest feathers.
