It’s pretty common this time of year in Colorado to have sudden thunderstorms & this evening was no exception. The wind was bad enough that it ripped the tarp cover off the pen about a minute after I got all 10 chickens shoved into the Big House. Good thing I had the feeling I should get everyone into the coop.

The good thing is that the storms usually don’t last very long. Apparently, though, it lasted just long enough for father & son to have a scuffle & Memnoch ended up with a swollen eye for the night.

Just like he did when she had her scare, Mercury wouldn’t leave Memnoch’s side & was very insistent that I not bother him. From the little I could check without her pecking my face off, his eye looks fine. There didn’t seem to be any cuts around or on the eye & I could open the lid to see there was no blood in it. Couple scrapers, these two. They’re gonna give me a heart attack.

Before the storm hit, the Normandy Flock got to find out about bread for the first time. In the first video, Memnoch discovers it first & starts to excitedly call for Mercury to come out of the Big House to check it out. This is the same thing Odysseus does to call his hens over when he’s finds tasty treats. Unfortunately, Mercury wasn’t doing what she’s supposed to do – run over to eat whatever Memnoch has found for her. So, in the second video, he got tired of trying to get her to come out & picked up the piece of bread & brought it to her.
