The Blue Red (right) & the Blue (left) chicks hatched this morning after getting a tiny bit of help from me. The Blue Red is super tiny & had been stuck with a single external pip for over 24 hours, so this morning I chipped some of the shell away to start the zip. I did the same thing  for the Blue (who is so much bigger than the Blue Red). They both Hulked their way out in less than 2 hours aft that.

Unfortunately, I didn’t really know how to help the Black Blue that was still moving as of this morning. It was shrink wrapped really good & I just didn’t know how to help with that. It most likely suffocated because of this. I couldn’t bring myself to eggtopsy it completely. 1 other egg had zero movement for the last 3 days (I could see the little chick foot stuck against the shell in the same place each time). That was the other Blue Red. Right now, there are 2 more eggs in the incubator with the hatched chicks, the Blue Silver & the other Black Blue, but I have a pretty strong feeling that they are also already dead.

This was a thing I was expecting since the eggs came from Georgia (much lower altitude, thinner shells) & lost way too much moisture during the incubation. Their air sacs just got super huge & I couldn’t get the humidity up high enough to correct that. This is what causes the membrane to shrink wrap the chick, from what I understand. I didn’t feel comfortable “assisting” with the hatching process in any way, even if I just barely chipped some shell away. I just didn’t feel comfortable trying to cut away the membrane to try & unwrap the chick. I was worried I would do something wrong that would cause me to have to kill the chick later on.

If nothing else, it was a $25 learning experience on what to do differently later on when I have the coops/pens set up for a completely sepearate flock from the Ithakē Flock. Oh, the White Hot Room Flock is on hold until I have more than 2 Phoenix bantams for it. I know where I can order eggs to try again or just chicks to bypass trying to hatch altogether, but it’s probably for the best to wait for that until I’m actually ready. I could always have Mercury & Frost be in a flock of 4 with them & skip trying to integrate them in with Odysseus & the hens. Stuff to think about since I do still need to built a grow out pen for them. I also need to pick 4 potential names for them (2 female, 2 male). They’ll still be named after cosmic characters from the Marvel Universe because I’m still a gigantic nerd.
