Day 14 & the chicks are still developing & moving inside their eggs. I had to use the flashlight feature on my iPhone to see anything inside the eggs. The OvaScope’s got too much of a lip around the light for the eggs to fit snugly against it & see anything at this stage. I’m actually gobsmacked that these 4 are still developing & moving. A lot of people on the BYC boards had so many troubles with much larger clutches for incubations that I wasn’t expecting to get anything to develope this far. I’m getting very nervous since, of course, I’m expecting something to go terribly wrong during the actual hatch. I mean, we’re not out of the woods until any chicks that hatched have full feathers & are moved outside. Even then, it’s still iffy. But, right now, they could die in the egg still, or while trying to get out of the egg, or in the first few hours after they hatch. Something could have gone wrong in the development (I’ve seen crooked beaks, extra legs) that might require me to kill the chick so it won’t suffer. This is where things get serious & I find out if I’m cut out for animal husbandry. One more week to find out.
