{Animal Mad Scientistry} And The Real Work Begins

At the end of January, I was pretty disappointed that I was going to have to go from working full-time at my day job to working part-time due to the brain trauma I sustained in my car accident. A cut in hours worked means a cut in pay at the end of the month. Because of that cut in pay, I had to cancel a lot of the plans I had in regards to what my long term goals were for raising chickens.

One goal that did not get cut was the attempt to incubate & hatch some eggs.

I had been waiting for Phoenix bantam eggs to show up since the end of January to try & hatch & start my Phoenix flock with. I’m terrible at waiting. I have been dying to try that Brinsea Mini Advance incubator since December! It was just inhumanely to wait any longer. I took the freshest 7 eggs I had & set them under the dome on Sunday. Today is Day 6 of the hatch:

I HAVE 4 OUT OF 7 EGGS DEVELOPING!!!

This is crazy! I’ve got 2 Athena eggs & 2 Calypso eggs developing. The 1 Penelope egg I had in there wasn’t fertile, which I kind of expected since her eggs are still pretty tiny. The 1 Nausicaä egg I had in there had a detached air sac & not so great shell consistency, so that was also kinda a given nothing would happen with that one too. The other dud was a Calypso egg & it also didn’t have great shell consistency.

Unfortunately, that means I only have 3 empty spots in the Brinsea for the Phoenix eggs if/when they show up. Not sure what I’m gonna do now. Might have to go to TSC & get a cheap incubator for lock down (the last 3-4 days of the incubation process where you stop turning the eggs & up the humidity & stop handling them so the chicks can start working their way out of their shells & absorbe the rest of the yolk) on these 4 while the other 6 Phoenix eggs continue to develop. Curse me & my kindergartener level of patience. That could never backfire on me.

Here’s each egg at Day 6!

Here’s kinda the long-term chicken plan:

I want to raise bantam breeds. Kinda a sucker for the tiny chickens now. The breeds I’m looking into are Phoenix (also the breed im starting with), Dwark Olandsks & Ohiki. I’m also interested in Svart Honas because of their colouring & possibly getting that colouring to be in a bantam breed. I was initially interested in Ayam Cemani until I found out that they were more like jungle fowl & jungle fowl are loud & noisy. That pretty much ticked them off the list, so I was extremely excited to find out about the Svart Honas/Black Swedish Hens & the fact they also have the same colouring but are more chicken (& hopefully less noisy).

I’ve got specific themes for each flock that I want to have. Odysseus’s flock is the mixed flock & that’s the Greek Mythology theme. The Phoenix bantam flock will be named after the cosmic Marvel Comics characters. The Dwark Olandsks flock will be named after dwarf characters from my favourite books, games & movies. The Ohiki flock will be named after Japanese mythological figures. And on the off chance I’ll ever score a breeding pair of Svart Honas, they’ll be named after characters from the Hellblazer comic books. Any chicks I get to hatch from Odysseus’s flock will be a free for all because I want to name one of his son’s with any of the Polish girls after the character Dorian from Dragon Age: Inquisition He is my favourite NPC that I didn’t romance in a BioWare game.
