Nbr 5 has a little domed noggin! Normally, Polish breed chickens have domed skulls in order to accommodate the full crest of feathers. Memnoch & Mercury didn’t have domed skulls because they developed partial crests instead of full crests (apparently, 1st gen of a cross between a full crest with a no crest equals a partial crest). I’m excited to see what type of crest this little nugget ends up with. I’m excited all around to see how he develops. His feathers are black & white, whereas M&M’s feathers were yellow & black after they hatched. I didn’t follow the correct breeding method needed to create my own strain (I should have bred Memnoch with the IthakÄ“ ladies & Mercury with Odysseus), but I think it’s safe to say I’m not really the most serious of breeders. Maybe I’ll try to get more like M&M next year.

As far as personality, all five nuggets are ornery as hell. Nbr 5 was shoving his way into the middle of 1-4 so he could be apart of the commotion while staying warm from their body heat. Nbr 1-4 are already trying to use their wings to get out of the brooder when the lid is off (Nbr 2 has figured it out already). This batch is going to be a handful.

{Animal Mad Scientistry} Year 2, Day 22 & Final Results

The final egg hatched around 9:20 this morning & that makes my hatch rate 5/7 for this year. It’s pretty amazing to see how much the first 4 have grown in a week & a half. The final picture above is Memnoch & Mercury as newly hatched chicks & Nbr 5. There’s a lot of similarities right now, but things might change as Nbr 5 continues to grow.

I wasn’t sure how well the first 4 would take Nbr 5 being added to the brooder, but I waited until it was close to night so there would be less will to be ornery (even as chicks, chickens seem to have this Off Switch when it gets dark). So far, things are okay. They did do a fair amount of pecking at Nbr 5 but nothing hard or mean, more just like they were curious. Of course, things could be different tomorrow during the day but I’m hoping for the best.

Potential names for Nbr 5 are (m/f): Spider (after Spider Jerusalem)/Tetra (after my Grey Warden in Dragon Age: Origins).

Overall, this was a satisfying & stressful hatch. I was thinking of trying to hatch some more of my own flock’s eggs before I decided I was too tired from my life outside the Animal House to go through another 21+ days of this again. I think I’m done for this year.

{Animal Mad Scientistry} Year 2, Day 21

image

Unfortunately, the Mystery Egg shrink wrapped & the chick ended up dying before it even made an internal pip. The good news is that Mercury’s egg has an external pip on day 21. Fingers crossed the little dude makes it all the way out.

Each day, the little dude improves. The “Finding Nemo” wing still looks odd, but the feathers are continuing to grow out & he’s stopped getting stuck on his back like a tortoise & he’s jumping onto & off the section of branch I put in there the other day. I hope that means good things for him. I don’t want him to be separated from the other birds because he can’t physically be out there & not be in danger of getting hurt or hurting himself (more than the normal threat level for a chicken out in the world). Chickens are pretty brutal on each other, especially when they see differences or perceive illnesses. Also, my flock is full of tiny Shit Lords who are ornery as hell & have serious attitude problems.

Accidentally got the wrong food for the dogs & they’ve been eating it like a kid eating Lucky Charms: they dig around for the marshmallows (the bits of lamb) first. Toki actually will get a mouthful of food & then spit out the chunks that aren’t lamb.

The Chick Cam has become essentially useless except in the middle of the night when all the chicks are sleeping because they like to gather around & peck at it now.

And the winds have started. They were pretty high when I was out rounding everyone up & the. I think I got caught in a microburst that had me clinging to the plastic wrapping of the pen as the winds ripped through. The compost lid got caught in them, flew off & threw the flight pen netting & inches away from my head. Surprisingly, losing all the plastic siding & that hole in the netting were the only damages.
