Every morning, the dogs all line up to get spoon fed breakfast by Mom or Dad. What a bunch of spoiled asses.

The peahens had a bit of an adventurous afternoon. It started off with Dalton discovering something she really didn’t like at all. Much like peacocks, peahens can also display their tails. The peahens do this when they feel threatened or when they want to display dominance. Dalton is definitely the alpha between her & Richmond, but every so often she’ll display her tail when something shows up that she’s not particularly happy about. While Damien displays his tail & then does the Shake Ya Ass Moonwalk in order to try wooing the females, Dalton displays her tail then leans forward & down really far in the direction of whatever she’s doesn’t like. I used Mom’s digital camera to take these pictures instead of my iPhone because I really wanted to get a good shot of what Dalton looks like all fired up & I knew she’d close up if I walked out there to get close enough to use my iPhone.

After that, they decided to go check out the roof of the barn. This is the first time the peahens have ventured out that far from Dante’s Inferno Room (the new name for the Big House) & the first time they’d gotten up that high. Richmond came back down pretty fast, so I couldn’t get a picture of her up there. Dalton, on the other hand, got stuck up there for about 20-30 minutes before pulling herself together & trusting in herself that she could make it down. I am a little more vigilant about keeping an eye of the peas just because I know they’ll take off if they down feel like this is their home base or if something catches their interest & they wander off after it. And also because Richmond & Dalton cost about $300 & that’s a lot of money to lose because I wasn’t keeping a good enough eye on them. So, naturally, I tried to get her down for about 15 minutes. This involved poking at her with a stick & a big animal net (tangent: this was difficult as I’m hobbit sized & I can’t stand on my tiptoes anymore) & tossing small pieces of wood at her in an attempt to irritate her into attempting to fly down. This didn’t work. In fact, I actually hit her with a palm-sized wood chip & she just looked down at me like I was a total asshole. Most of the time, she just paced back & forth & honked in distress before I went back inside so she could figure out what she needed to do. And, eventually, she did.

Damien went on a little adventure this morning. Sparta joined him as far as the extended pen gate & then realised there was snow everywhere. So, I caught up to Damien & he let me pet him! I, of course, took this as a sign to push my luck & try to pick him up. He let me put my arm around his body, but the minute I tightened up, he took off. Let me tell you, peacocks are a lot tougher & stronger than they look. Dude about knocked my ass out when he smacked open his wing directly into my face. My nose still hurts like something fractured in there.

image

Anyhow, he stayed on the barn roof until I went back in the house & he was positive I wasn’t going to come back out for him. It’ll probably take another year before he trusts me enough to touch him again.

5 years ago, my little brick of a dog, Arya Stark, was born. My brother’s friend’s family owned her mom & dad & when I got her she & her pack mates had been growing up with a calf named Angus. I think this is why she’s not very interested in playing with toys. As much as I tried to get her to play with all of Toki’s toys, she didn’t want to play with them unless they were the reason Toki was playing with her. She’s always been more interested in anything she can eat. I was definitely more lax with her as a puppy because she is about 2 billion times more stubborn than Toki & she worn me down pretty fast & her & Toki started to get away with a lot more stuff than Toki did on his own.

She was very used to living in a pack, whereas Toki wasn’t, so she also wore him down until he decided it was okay for her to be in our pack. She did this by following him wherever he went & lying down right next to him when they’d go to sleep.

She’s a tough little dog. I don’t think Toki would go after half the things they chase out in the backyard if she wasn’t willing to go after everything. She’s also a little love bug & constantly wants belly rubs & to be carried around like a baby. She’s my goofy little Short Round.

And this is Toki taking off with the giant Pound Puppy I bought her (along with food) as a birthday present.

The past couple of days have actually felt like winter: very cold. Today, the waterers kept freezing & slushing up. On a surprising note, it didn’t snow much in the main pen!

Damien actually let me get close enough to him to get a good picture of his single ocelli! It looks like a real peacock feather now!

Memnoch & I had the same hairdo today.

So, the day started out with tragedy. Junior died sometime between 6pm last night & 8am this morning. No one is sure hat happened with her, but I guess she had been having seizures recently. The only good this is that Smoke is old enough to eat regular food & that Samson, Tawanda & Leo have been taking care of her. Samson is once again without a mate.

Today, I had to clean up & set up stuff for the birds before the weather turned. This meant that most everyone got to run around & be crazy after being penned for more days in a row than I would have liked. Even Richmond & Dalton joined in going nutso on me.

Got home really late due to traffic, so this is a little Throwback Tuesday post about Lila. She was so tiny when she hatched, I was worried she wouldn’t make it & die shortly after hatching like Neutron had. But she thrived & took on the role of protector to Nyx & Sparta even though she was smaller then they were.

Today, she’s almost as big as Memnoch & Nyx still snuggles up under her sometimes when they roost at night. She even mother hens the peahens on occasion.

I’m still sad about what happened to Big Blue, but I’m glad Big Blue was around long enough to make sure Little Blue survived long enough to grow into Lila.

I ended up putting a red light in the Big House to add a bit more heat than the heating plate was putting out. Unfortunately, despite being advertised for both brooders & coops, it wasn’t changing the temperature all that much in the Big House. That was okay when it wasn’t blizzard conditions & below zero. The red light is just a regular red flood light, not an actual heat lamp, that puts just enough heat out to make me feel better about leaving tiny Sparta out there in the lowest temps.

A funny side effect from having the red light in there is the glow the Big House gets from the light pouring out of the south side window reflecting off the plastic wrap on the main pen. I kind of want to make a facade for the Big House that looks like Dante’s Inferno Room from Beetlejuice now.

It got nice enough today that the flock adventured out of the main pen for the first time in a week. Damien and Sparta were the most enthusiastic adventurers.

image

image

I also noticed that Damien got his first eye! I’m not sure when it happened, but look at that tiny eye on his train feathers! I feel so proud of him. I wasn’t sure when they would start to develop because I haven’t been back to the peafowl board at Backyard Chickens since the people there were super rude. His second and third eyes are developing right next to it. I can’t wait to see him with a full train of eyes.

image

He still mostly shakes his ass at me, though, so seeing them when they develop might be tricky for me…

Smoke was even out and about a lot. Damien also made friends with two of the Feral Black Clan of rabbits.

Toki really liked the Talking Elcor I ordered. He kept trying to chew on it until it said, “Affectionately: I love you” & then he just touched noses with it.
