They really love day-old popcorn. I don’t know why, but I don’t like popcorn at all.

I caught Penelope making her way to the top roost ahead of everyone else. Took her a couple tries (kinda hard when your vision is obscured by your hairstyle), but she eventually made it there.

(the top roost is the coveted spot in the Big House)

My Fancy Ladies are getting big. I still can’t believe all 14 birds sleep in the Big House together now. They all go up at night and don’t mutilate each other, so I guess that’s a one thing I did right by them.

Nyx went angry broody on me today. She flattened out, flared up her feathers, and pecked at me when I moved her off the nest. I’ll have to remove the golf balls again and hope that stops her from trying to sit on the eggs.

{Flock Updates} 1 Year Anniversary

image

A year ago today, I met Odysseus on my grandparents’ front porch & decided that if no one claimed him or if he didn’t fly away by the end of the week, I would take him home & care for him instead of calling animal control to pick him up. I don’t know why I decided I needed to take care of him because I didn’t have any experience with poultry prior to him.i don’t know why my parents agreed to let me bring him home because that pretty much made me moving out any time soon a pipe dream.

It hasn’t been a completely drama free year, especially these last few months. This morning, in fact, I set up his doctor appointment for Saturday morning to get weighted for antibiotics & checked up on from his fights with Memnoch.

Those first few weeks, though, when he would nest in my hood & preen my hair before going up for the night. I was so optimistic that I could take care of him & that I could take care of multiple flocks. Sure cocked that one up.

Dad discovered the new predator(s) we had show up in the last few days. There are no graphic images following the cut, but I wanted a warning just in case.

Took some time this afternoon to clean out the main pen. Because of the rainy days & the peafowl, things get smelly really fast. I remember almost a year ago, 1 tiny rooster in that pen. So much grass, hardly any mess. The grass was taken out pretty quick when the Ithakē ladies arrived & the 6 additions earlier this year helped wipe it all out completely. The peafowl, especially this past week when Damien spent a lot of time in there, add about 11 chickens worth of waste each, double that for Damien. Unfortunately, that’s an aspect of peafowl tending that’s going to get bigger as the hens continue to grow.

Memnoch still has death eyes for Odysseus & they ran a few laps while I was out there raking & shoveling. It still cracks me up the Odysseus will run to & fly up to my to get away from him. I did notice that he’s unfortunately displaying mycoplasma gallispeticum now. I’m hoping he’s strong enough to make it another week because I don’t have the money to take him into the vet until I get paid. It would be nice to get him in for an overall check up since he’s had those fights with Memnoch. I feel like the worst animal caregiver on the planet lately, especially when it comes to him in particular.

Getting close to Dalton & Richmond have gone back to No Gonna Happen mode again, so unfortunately this is as good a picture I can get of their development right now. Dalton’a crest has really come in full & nice & she’s started to develop the eyeliner markings that she didn’t have back in August. Richmond’s crest feathers have also started to grow back in. The single feather she had grown out earlier that didn’t get plucked out by someone is still there, but the rest are all tightly grouped & healthy looking (as near as I can tell). The best news, though, is that no one has plucked them out!

It stopped raining today! So, I let everyone run around for a bit before I had to go into work. Damien ran off almost immediately & I was a little worried he wouldn’t come back. I’m pretty sure that’s the most he’s been penned up since running away from his first home. I couldn’t find him, so I put everyone back up in the main pen & went back inside to take care of the dogs & heard him honking. I went back out to the backyard & found him coming back around from the front yard just honking away in anger at me. It seemed like he was pissed I left him out of the main pen while putting everyone else up.

It’s finally been feeling like fall in Colorado. This weekend, I have to set up the Sweeter Heater from the ceiling of the Big House & flip the roosts so everyone can sleep on the flat side of the 2x4s instead of the thin side. I’m also hoping to get help with at least starting the roof for the main pen. Next week after pay day, I have to buy some supplies to build a main pen extension. With something bigger than a red tailed hawk eating the rabbits, I don’t want to risk leaving Memnoch & Damien out unsupervised & unprotected while I’m at work.

{Flock Updates} 5 Year Anniversary

5 years ago today, I adopted this dork & named him the most ridiculously metal name a dog has ever had, Toki Wartooth (Not A Bumblebee), & he saved my life.
