For the first time in 6 months, I finally got outside & threw the tennis ball around for Toki & Arya. It didn’t last very long before my legs & ankles started to hurt & it was obvious very quickly that I’m nowhere near recovered enough to play ball like we used to. It’s a bit frustrating & depressing, but it was nice to see them running around again.

Today, I discovered that Calypso is kinda more broody than I thought. She made the most terrifying dinosaur screech at Athena this afternoon while sitting on the nest.

I also discovered or confirmed that all 4 hens are now laying eggs! Look how cute & little the eggs are when they first start laying! This is good news for my attempted hatching in a few weeks since Odysseus has picked Nausicaä as his favourite hen. If I’m going to have a higher chance of hatching success, it’ll be with her eggs right now.

Tried to get a shot of Calypso doing the dirt bath thing but the red heat lamp just makes it look like a seedy porn shot that you can’t really tell what’s going on in. They love the dirt in the barn, the hens do. I’ve yet to see Odysseus roll around like a drunk in the dirt like the his ladies do.

Two today & both in the nesting box! They still don’t look like golf balls, though. It looks like Athena (the bigger egg) & Calypso (the smaller egg with a slight dent towards the pointy end) are probably going to be the hens I try hatching from. Despite, or possibly because of, Odysseus mating on the regular with Penelope & Nausicaä, they aren’t laying eggs often enough to make hatching from them a sure thing. Right now, it really depends on when the Phoenix bantam eggs ship/arrive.

Hot damn! 3 eggs today! All are different sizes/shapes so they are definitely from 3 different hens & not eggs I missed. From the size/shape & location (all 3 were in different places but all within the same vicinity of each other), it looks like Athena, Calypso & Penelope are the egg layers. Just gotta get Nausicaä to start laying since there’s a higher chance her eggs will be fertile than the other hens. She seems to be Odysseus’s favourite hen now, probably because she’s still much smaller than the other 3. Or he just likes his ladies feisty!

Okay, so, here’s a thing I thought was silly when I read about it but decided to give it a try. If you want to encourage your hens to lay eggs in a certain spot (normally, the nesting boxes in the coop), you can use fake/wooden eggs. You place the fake egg where you want the real eggs to be left. You can also use a golf ball if you don’t want to buy a fake egg. Obviously, and went with the No Money Spent option & borrowed a golf ball from my grandparents, not thinking it would actually work. Well. It works. I keep imagining them laying the egg next to the golf ball & wondering why they can’t get their eggs to look like it.

Back down to 1-2 eggs a day. Which isn’t a bad thing right now since no one is eating any of them (I’m saving for the incubation/hatch I’m going to attempt in a few weeks – more on that later).

Dude has been really rowdy lately.

I think I mostly decided to try raising/breeding bantams because I like when Odysseus hops up onto my shoulder & just hangs out there. The idea of tiny roosters perching on my shoulders tickles me. Then makes me feel like a crazy bird lady in the park.

image

The hens are getting more adventurous. They don’t want to be carried from the barn to the run anymore & are frequently hopping down to investigate their surroundings or, in Nausicaä’s case this morning, walk themselves into the run. Odysseus was the one I had been worried would take off on me, but he’s still very content to ride around either in my hand or on my shoulder. It’s pretty much the only time he’s not being a complete shit to me lately.

One egg today & I dropped it. In the house. Luckily, the membrane didn’t break so the white & yolk stayed in the egg shell.

Unfortunately for her, Arya is one of those dogs that frequently gets ear problems. I have a hard time squirting the cleaner & medicine in her ear because your whole life you’re told NOT to let water or any liquid get into a dog’s ears. I’m always worried I’m going to do it wrong & make things worse even though I know you can’t do this process wrong. It’s always the same ear for her (left) & luckily the medicine we got last time at the vet for her doesn’t expire until next year. Saved some money on that one!

So, Toki got to witness Odysseus mounting Athena & he had the funniest reaction. Right now, he still runs at the cage to make them scatter, but he has stopped barking at them. So, he’s running around, making everyone scramble, pausing just long enough to make the next scare an explosion of feathers & squawks. This time when he paused, Athena came out of the house & Odysseus immediately mounted her. If you haven’t ever seen a rooster mount a hen, it’s a little rough. It’s a lot rough, let’s be honest, & a lot of people mistake it as the rooster bullying the hen. It doesn’t last very long, no matter if the rooster is just establishing dominance or actually mating with the hen, but it’s awkward to see. Toki sees this happen, it stops him dead in his tracks. When it’s over, he slowly turned around, walked back up to the house & hid under the dining room table.

I bought a date stamper to date the eggs with since my handwriting took a bit of a nosedive after the accident. I’m not sure if it’s another result of the brain trauma or not, & I known no one else notices the difference, but I see it getting sloppy & I don’t like it. I thought getting a stamp would be easier. The stamp itself is the perfect size but I think I might have gotten the wrong ink for what I want to use the stamp for. It’s really smeared & takes forever to dry. I’ll have to look for some different ink pads or just use some of my Copic or Prismacolor markers & see if that works.
